Weather in the Turks and Caicos Islands

climate and weather in the turks and caicos islandsThe Turks and Caicos Islands is an autonomous British territory in the Atlantic Ocean, close to the Bahamas. One of the many idyllic island groups in the region, it is famous for its spa resorts, lush golf courses, exciting adventures and, of course, gorgeous beaches dipping into the crystal Caribbean. If the next family holiday or the upcoming honeymoon is an island getaway, then come here for a luxury paradise.

This is a year round destination, but each season comes with its own rewards; there is the high season (December to April), low season (July to October) and shoulder seasons (May to June; November).

The high season is technically winter, but this is the Caribbean, so winter means average temperatures in the mid-20s (+75°F). Except for December, there is very little rain; so the only thing to worry about is whether the tan is brown enough.

The low season is technically summer, which means that most days will be in the upper-20s (+80°F), with some heavy showers, and it is more humid than other times of year. This combination results in regular tropical storms and there is the odd chance of a hurricane, but, thanks to satellite technology, authorities are aware of these threats well in advance.

Shoulder seasons are the best of both worlds, warm, not too wet and neither too pricey nor busy. Average temperatures are in the upper-20s (+80°F) and it is only November that has any significant rainfall.

The water temperatures remain in the mid-20s (+75°F) all year and there is always plenty of sunshine. With great year-round weather, numerous events and festivals throughout the year, as well as a great array of fellow holidaymakers, the hardest decision is choosing a colour for the little cocktail umbrella.

When is the best time to go to the Turks and Caicos Islands?

Temperatures remain in the 20s (75°F) year-round, but each season has a different feel, along with a different price tag. If price is no option, and crowds are not too much of a bother, then this is the ideal island getaway from December to January, when winter is coldest in Europe and America.

Budget travellers, who do not mind a bit of light rain, should come between April and May; not only will they also miss the crowds, but it is safely outside of hurricane season as well.

June to November is cheaper and less crowded than other times of year, but it is also wetter, as well as hurricane season (do not worry though, satellite forecasts help prevent any tragedies). Make sure there is plenty of sunblock and seek out shade nearby because it becomes scorching hot at times. Take along strong insect repellent because mosquitoes can be a major bother; but, regardless of these warnings, many people take advantage of the fact that it is the warmest time of year.

What to pack for a holiday in the Turks and Caicos Islands

Relax in the casual culture and wear light coloured, loose cotton clothing to stay cool. With the beach always a stone’s throw away, it’s shorts, T-shirts and swimming costumes all day and night. A sarong or light covering, as well as hats, sunscreen and sunglasses are necessary for the Caribbean sun. Sandals and breathable walking shoes, preferably amphibian shoes, are necessary, and a light raincoat or even an appropriate covering is useful in the rainy season. Even if a restaurant requires something formal, there is no need to pack anything too fancy, but take something fashionable along anyway.
